This Side of the Sky by Laura Wifler is such a beautiful reminder that we can be honest about the hard things in life without losing sight of God’s goodness.
What I loved most about this book is the way Laura doesn’t shy away from pain, grief, chaos, or the things we wish were different. Instead, she meets those things with honesty while continually pointing back to the nearness of God. Her words reminded me that faith doesn’t mean pretending everything is okay, it means knowing that God is with us even when it isn’t.
I was especially moved by the way Laura writes about parenting a daughter with special needs. There is such tenderness in the way she shares that part of her story. She doesn’t gloss over the challenges, but she also doesn’t allow them to overshadow the beauty, joy, and worth of her daughter. Her perspective was such a beautiful picture of trusting God with the things we cannot control and finding Him present in the middle of everyday challenges.
This book feels like a companion for the seasons when life feels especially heavy. It offers encouragement without minimizing the pain, joy without pretending the hard things aren't there, and a beautiful reminder that Heaven is real, and that the hope of Heaven changes the way we live today.
