Bible Comparisons

bible comparison blog post

There are so many great choices for a Bible today. It’s the question I get asked the most- “what Bible is that?!” I have several, so I am going to share each one I use/have used and what I love/don’t love about it! I’m only reviewing Bibles that I have and have used. There’s obviously many more options than this!

ESV Single Column Journaling Bible

bible comparison: single column journaling bible

2 inch margins

7.5 font size

Black text (no red text for Jesus’ words)

Single Column Text

Cream paper

What I love

  • I love all the space

  • This one is soft cover so it opens easily

  • Easy to carry around

What I don’t love

  • No cross-references (but there currently isn’t a single-Column Journaling Bible that has cross-references).

Overall

This is my favorite Bible and what I use everyday. It has OT/NT + plenty of journaling space.

ESV Wide Margin Reference Bible

1 inch margins

9 font size

Black text (no red text for Jesus’ words)

Double Column Text

Cross-References

Cream paper

What I love

  • Cross References! I absolutely love having cross references, and most journaling Bible’s don’t have them

  • Not a huge Bible

What I don’t love

  • I don’t love double column journaling Bibles - you just don’t have as much space to write since there is more text to every page

Overall

This is a good Bible if you like double column journaling Bibles + if you want cross references!

ESV Inductive Journaling Bible

bible comparison: inductive journaling bible

3/8 space between each line of text

9.5 font size

Black text (no red text for Jesus’ words)

Cream paper

What I love

  • I love the double spaced text

  • You can really study each word - writing meanings/definitions under the text

What I don’t love

  • No Old Testament

  • Although the double spaced text is great, the margins are smaller so it isn’t great for writing long notes

Overall

This is a good Bible for going in depth, studying words, highlighting, etc. But you would need another Bible for your Old Testament which makes it sort of inconvenient. This is a good Bible if you are getting started in the Inductive method, but you aren’t a huge journaler.

ESV Illuminated Bible

bible comparison: ESV Illuminated Bible

2 inch margins

9 font size

Black text (no red text for Jesus’ words)

Single Column

Cream paper

What I love

  • Beautiful illustrations throughout

  • Lots of gold foil

  • More space at the top and bottom of the page (almost an inch)- so wide margins + wider top margins than any of the other Bibles

What I don’t love

  • Illustrations throughout is also something I don’t love. While it is beautiful- it can get in the way of journaling

  • Very heavy Bible

Overall

This is a gorgeous Bible! It’s pretty heavy so it’s not great for taking to church/out all of the time.

ESV Illuminated Bible

CSB She Reads Truth Bible

bible comparison: she reads truth bible

1.75 inch margins

8 font size

Black text (no red text for Jesus’ words)

White paper

Almost 200 devotionals throughout Bible

Introductions to each book

What I love

  • The devotions are great- very helpful for digging deeper/understanding the text

  • The introductions to the beginning of each book

  • There are reading plans for each book, with key verses

What I don’t love

  • Pretty heavy/big Bible

  • I am an ESV girl, so I am not a huge fan of the translation

Overall

This is a great study Bible. It helps you dig deeper + give you great commentary right in your Bible.

ESV Scripture Journal

1 inch margins

11.75 font size

Black text (no red text for Jesus’ words)

1 page of text/Blank page for journaling

Single Column/Paragraph format

Cream paper

What I love

  • How small/compact it is

  • Lots of space for journaling (a whole page!)

What I don’t love

  • You’re stuck with just this one book, so you would still need another Bible

Overall

These are great if you’re studying one book of the Bible, and you don’t want to get distracted by any other books. It’s good for in-depth study because there is so much room to write. It’s good for throwing in your purse, or having it on your nightstand so you can read before bed.

(Pretty much the same as the journal above, but it’s the “Illuminated” version which means there’s gold foil without. My review is the same for both).

What I love

  • How small/compact it is

  • Lots of space for journaling (a whole page!)

What I don’t love

  • You’re stuck with just this one book, so you would still need another Bible
